3. Sock puppets

Online sock puppets aren't as harmless as their namesake. They're false identities businesses or individuals create to generate buzz about themselves. For example, a brand may pose as a satisfied customer and rave about its product. Sock puppets can also be used to condemn a competing brand. Either way, it's more biased and disingenuous than regular advertising.
