It might be something you said in a chat room, a credit card purchase, even your last name. Since 2001, with the inception of the Patriot Act, the U.S. government has the authority to monitor individuals that it suspects may be "agents of foreign powers". G-men can view your banking transactions, track your IP address, wiretap your phone, and even search your house when you're not home. If mind reading is real, they may get away with that too.
