St. Patrick Wasn't Irish
While revered as the Patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick was actually Welsh. He was captured by Irish pagans in the mid-5th century and held in Ireland as a slave for six years before escaping to his native Britain. He achieved fame by later returning to Ireland as a Catholic missionary. He was obviously successful — 88% of today's Irish citizens are Catholic.
