MLK Assassination: Was James Earl Ray Innocent?
Cause: Cosa Nostra?
When King arrived in Memphis the day before his death, Reddit felt something was amiss with the security and therefore posted himself at Fire Station 2 to monitor the situation. He says that his superior officer requested he leave just before King's assassination. Reddit's testimony at the 1977 inquiry is lengthy but confusing. He claims that he was coerced into giving testimony that implicated James Earl Ray and no one else. Though Reddit's testimony mentions neither a sniper in the bushes nor army officers on the roof, could it be that he was deliberately removed from his surveillance post so that he wouldn't see them?
POSSIBLE CONSPIRATORS: The Mafia
The fact that it took two months to find Ray (while Raul has yet to be found) could indicate a large support system with enough connections and money to muck up a crime scene and keep the shooter hidden from justice. One such organization with the skills to accomplish this is the Mafia.
It would be difficult to trace an alleged money trail that is over 40 years cold, but in the late sixties, many politicians, policemen, and other community leaders still held Klan membership. In their closed southern communities, these men would have the power to order a detective to be recalled and bushes to be dug. They would have also been nearly immune from prosecution in a conspiracy case.
POSSIBLE CONSPIRATORS: The U.S. Government
After the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964, King continued to lobby for income equality, environmental justice, and an end to the war in Vietnam. 1968 was the year he was scaling up his pro-poor agitation. Obviously the U.S. government saw him as a threat to civil peace. Was he threatening enough that he had to be removed? Dexter King believes that President Johnson was ultimately behind the plot to kill Dr. King, but he is in the minority...
