Who Is Gabrielle Giffords?

Giffords, the 40-year-old third-term Congresswoman from Tucson married to astronaut Mark Kelly (also pictured), is herself a subject of great debate. The so-called Blue Dog Democrat is pro-gun but also supported President Obama's healthcare-reform proposal. The night of her crucial vote, Giffords' office was vandalized in what some saw as a retaliatory move. Most disturbingly, at a Giffords town hall meeting in 2009, police were called in after an unidentified attendee dropped a handgun.Giffords herself was well aware of the threat. She told MSNBC: "We're on Sarah Palin's targeted list... [and] the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they have to realize that there are consequences to that action."
